Maintenance Training Devices
Maintenance Training Devices (MTD)
ASI designs and delivers maintenance training devices that span the full spectrum — from part task trainers to fully virtual environments. Devices feature an Instructor Operator Station (IOS) for injecting faults and malfunctions, supporting realistic troubleshooting scenarios, and form-fit-function hardware for hands-on remove and replace (R&R) task training. We closely integrate, reference, and build to mirror Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) and digital technical data systems to ensure concurrent maintainer training. Some examples include the B-1 Maintenance Training System (MTS), the T-7 MTS, and the HC-144 Maintenance Training Unit (MTU).
B-1 Maintenance Training System (MTS)
The B-1 MTS provides for the simulation of fault isolation and remove/replace maintenance activities for all B-1 aircraft systems. It includes several types of maintenance training devices: the Primary/Secondary Flight Control Systems Maintenance Trainer (P/SFCSMT), Simulated Maintenance Trainer Systems (SMTS), Avionics/Armament Maintenance Trainer Systems (A/AMTS), and Egress Trainers.
ASI replaced obsolete, 1980s-era maintenance trainer boards with our interactive multi-touch Virtual Maintenance Panel (VMP), virtually replicating the B-1 aircraft for maintenance training. The aircraft and its subsystems are represented by 2D and 3D models in a virtual environment, along with interactive functional diagrams, allowing step-by-step procedures and free play. The VMP integrates with the MTDs for enhanced training.
T-7 Maintenance Training System (MTS)
ASI’s T-7 MTS provides the Forward Integrated Systems Maintenance Trainer (ISMT), Crew Station Trainer (CST), and Ejection Seat Maintenance Trainer (ESMT). These systems recreate the cockpit and forward section of the aircraft hardware and software. The trainers provide R&R, electrical, and mechanical troubleshooting. Following the IETM closely, they replicate aircraft subsystems and avionics to train multiple maintainer specialty codes. The devices integrate with the virtual aircraft Digital Maintenance Trainer (DMT) to enable visualization of training tasks and the effects on the entire aircraft.
HC-144 Maintenance Training Unit (MTU)
The HC-144 MTU is a training device playing a crucial role in instructing over 100 students annually on the fundamental principles and practices of aviation maintenance for the U.S. Coast Guard. The device includes large hardware systems that recreate portions of the aircraft and are linked to virtual devices for deeper understanding of platform systems and the effects of maintenance issues and resolutions. These systems integrate with electronic maintenance job guides and allow for both instructor-led and student-independent training. The software and avionics used in the maintenance trainer is the same software running in the flight trainers, also developed by ASI, adapted with maintenance fault capabilities. This common software baseline across maintenance and aircrew training devices improves concurrency and reduces lifecycle costs.
