CH-46E
CH-46E Aircrew Procedures TrainerASI received a contract from NAWCTSD in February 1999 to design, produce, and deliver a CH-46E Aircrew Procedures Trainer (APT) for the U.S. Marine Corps by extensively refurbishing and modifying an existing APT cockpit from Device 2F172. The resulting high-fidelity device replicated the physical and performance characteristics of the CH-46E helicopter. The new APT included a fully functional cockpit mockup surrounded by a continuous-display out-the-window visual image comprised of four view-ports. The visual system replicated day, dusk, night, and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible scenes that were correlated with the in-cockpit radar simulation and the simulated threat environment. The APT simulated the ground handling, takeoff, flight, and landing characteristics of its design basis aircraft in normal, faulted, and emergency operations. The simulated cockpit was fully NVG-compatible and included a Night Vision Goggle Heads-Up Display (NVG-HUD). The trainer included up-to-date aircraft systems such as the Communication Navigation Control Set (CNCS), the AN/ARC-210 radio system and the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS), and simulated ownship defensive weapon systems that interact with the threat environment. The host computer system was based on Pentium III processors running the Linux non-proprietary operating system. The trainer included an Instructor/Operator Station (IOS) that was developed by ASI. It features a pair of NVG-compliant flat-panel displays utilizing a Graphical User Interface that is very intuitive to operate. The APT was designed to provide training for both the pilot and copilot, and to be operated without an instructor present. It was housed in a pair of oversized military vans so that it can be transferred to any location desired. The trainer was delivered to Okinawa, Japan in September 2001. NAWCTSD modified this contract in September 2000 to have ASI upgrade two CH-46E Weapon Systems Trainers (WSTs), Devices 2F173 S/N 1 and 2. The upgrade includes installation of the CNCS, AN/ARC-210 radio system, NVG-HUD, and the GPWS, plus incorporation of other airframe and avionics changes, bringing the trainer concurrent with the fleet aircraft. Also included in the effort is the correction of some existing discrepancies in aerodynamics and aircraft systems simulation to improve trainer fidelity. A key feature of the upgrade is the installation of the same ASI-developed IOS as provided with the CH-46E APT, located on-board the motion platform of each WST, directly behind the cockpit. Because of this modification, the contract was completed in November 2002. ASI has subsequently received several follow-on orders for spares and upgrades including concurrency upgrades to the trainer’s Operational Flight Programs. (For more information, please contact us.)
