Aero Simulation Delivers Two Presidential Support TrainersOn April 14, 2003, ASI achieved final Naval Air Systems Command and Marine Corps acceptance on an Aircrew Procedures Trainer (APT) for the Sikorsky VH-3D helicopter at Marine Corps Air Station Quantico, VA. The VH-3D is known around the world as “Marine One” when its most notable passenger, the President of the United States is aboard. The VH-3D APT joined an ASI produced VH-60N APT that was accepted in February 2003 for Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) at Quantico. Both APTs feature full fidelity cockpits and visual display systems that have a field of view of 150 degrees horizontal by 55 degrees vertical. A cockpit view from the VH-60 APT is shown below on approach to the South Lawn pad occupied by a VH-3D. In addition to the Pilot and Copilot positions, the VH-60 features the Communications Systems Officer’s station. The APTs are “containerized”, can be re-located and do not require custom-built trainer facilities. These high fidelity simulators will allow both new and experienced aircrew members to practice normal and emergency procedures realistically and under a variety of day and night weather conditions. Networked via the USMC’s standard Tactical Environment Network (TEN), the devices allow crews of both types of aircraft to fly joint missions in a common problem world complete with other aircraft and a variety of realistic threats.
